Why Does Motivation Matter?

Motivation is necessary to remain focused on the goal. Incentives are tied to motivation by giving the individual an objective or a reward to work toward.

Why Are Incentives Important?

Employees need goals to work toward, and incentives can be monetary or nonmonetary rewards used to inspire individuals to achieve their goals.

Incentive: something that encourages a person to do something or to work harder. (Miriam-Webster Dictionary)

Types of Incentives

Rewards can be awarded to all employees, or employees who participate can be entered into a drawing for a chance to win. Drawings can be monthly, quarterly, or annually.

Monetary

  • Health-related promotional items.
  • Company SWAG (stuff we all get).
  • Gift cards.
  • Cash.
  • Tickets.

Nonmonetary

  • Certificates.
  • Badges.
  • Trophies.
  • Preferred parking.
  • Additional vacation time.
  • Recognition in meetings.
  • Dress down day.
  • Front of the line for a workplace holiday meal or potluck.
  • Extra lunchtime.

Participation

Reimbursements for the following:

  • Gym membership.
  • Weight management program.
  • Entry fees for walks, runs, cycling, or other health-related events.
